West St. John Elementary School

The school exterior has been designed to meld contemporary language into the semi-rural con-text with durable, environmentally responsible, regionally sourced materials.

West St. John Elementary School, in Edgard, LA, is a new 38,000 SF two-story classroom addition to the existing elementary school campus. The existing school, last upgraded in 1985, was in critical need of updated facilities and improved learning environments that would meet the growing and changing demands of todayu2019s learning environ-ments.

The new two-story addition is a state-of-the-art building with 14 new classrooms, multi-purpose teaching and science lab, dedicated computer lab, teaching support spaces and dedicated media center & library. The new addition is designed to create a sustainable and healthy learning environment with ample access to daylighting for all teaching environments, flexible teaching spaces, and the ability to expand and upgrade technologies. The addition and reno-vations created a positive learning environment while also creating a renewed focal point for the town of Edgard.

The school exterior was designed to meld contemporary language into the semi-rural context with durable, environmentally responsible materials that are highly recyclable and manufactured or sourced regionally.

Athough the parish school board elected not to apply for certification the school is designed to meet the LEED for Schools 2007 design criteria.
